Perfect Summer

I was ten and my cousins came to visit for vacation

my mother was going to taste Southern California,

everyday would be a new amusement park or movie.

for a kid it was a perfect summer,

each night going to bed dreaming of the next park,

Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and even the Zoo,

it was heaven where I never wanted to leave.

What made it special was being with my cousin

we were both the same age and love so many of the same things,

rode the same roller coasters, even got sick at the same time,

now that was a mark of really relative.

Share hot dogs and also drank out of the same coke bottles,

no worries about diseases or other worries,

just loving the moment and having the best time,

we gathered a trunk load of souvenirs,

a mindful of memories and smiles.

For two weeks we were the princes of July

who saved the world with squirt guns and plastic swords

countless imaginary monsters were slain in the process,

went to bed each night reliving those battles

before falling asleep to such heroic incredible dreams.
